I learned something new yesterday.  It turns out I need a pedal wrench to change the pedals on my road bike.  I had no idea.  I wanted to take the clipless pedals off and replace them with the clip pedals that came with the bike and had to take the bike to the LBS to have it done.  They charged me $5 to switch them out; a pedal wrench would have been $28.  It was worth it to have them do it.  Who would ‘ve guessed!

I’ve used a standard 1/2 inch (I believe) open-ended wrench to remove mine.  That wouldn’t have worked?

A standard wrench was too thick and the wrench flats on the pedal were kind of concave.  I have another set of what I thought were the same pedals on my hybrid, but those have an ever so slightly longer bolt and can be removed with a standard wrench.

All mine are 15mm on the pedal side and 5.5 mm Allen hex on the back side.  Sure can get a lot of tools for $28!

Metric may have been part of my problem too.  Either way, it was easier to have the LBS do it.  Besides that, it gave me a chance to look at the really cool Electra bikes.  I can see how people end up with a garage full of bikes, because I want every bike I see!

I can say that the LBS could be a good thing or a bad thing with regard to the pedals.  One day my wife and I took our tandem to the LBS to get a tune up (something I do but had to take a trip to LA) and received a call that one of my crank arms have been stripped at the pedal. Now the bad news was that they put on the pedals when we purchased and picked up the bike.  I even showed them the receipt.  I was kind of mad and simply took the issue to another LBS and was sold used tandem cranks for a real good deal after he (owner of the LBS tried some tricks to make the pedal lock in. But, as a rule for me my small flat 15/16 open end wrench makes it hard to over tighten and does the job for me. I have kids that need the bike some times and I put the reg-pedals on that came with the bike. My pedals are 15 and a allen hex.  Never had a probelm yet. It is nice to have the LBS to do the tight work is it not!
