The holes in the streets make for a high degree of alertness on your part. Tire pressure is the key for keeping you on the street or walking. I keep mine maxed to full. I am rather heavy on the bike and my studded tires have a lot of room to work with. The edges of the holes can be very sharp and will take you out before you can say “jiminy crickets.“
Most commuters avoid the cold and icy condition and will not have to put up with them. For me, I call the city and have them fix the ones I feel can do me and the bike harm. It just takes a call to street maintenance. So far they come out the same day.
For us cyclist that commute in this kind of weather, we find that our routes are a lot narrower and make for some conditions of sharing the road unavoidable. The sidewalks are not the way to go because of the build up of black-ice and Ice-dams. I was told that the sidewalks will always be trashed by the plows and no changes will be made.
When commuting on the streets, you will find lots of holes ahead of you, keep your lines of movement in smooth predictable lines, never tack or abrupt weave. Keep your eyes looking way ahead and behind to make a safe avoidance move. You will get a few honks, but most drivers are cool.
Something way off the subject!
I still think that if the streets are posted 25 mph it is OK to mingle but, if they are posted 45 to 55 mph then it’s a form of murder. Something that MOST car drivers get away with.
Please, it is just my thinking. I know a lot of you fellow cyclist like to be a moving obstacle and think that drivers like to have someone going 25 to 30 on a street that posted 45. but that is just me.
