I haven’t been on in a while, because life’s been busy but thats not to say that I haven’t been riding and learning as I go on maintenance.  Since I don’t have a high end bike, the components consisting of the hub and freewheel on the bikes I have around are hard to identify and I have been trying to learn about how to do maintenance on hubs (dissassembly/cleaning/regreasing), and have a lot of wheels lying around from various makes that I have been playing with for fun.  The problem is, I want to buy the proper tool from Park Tool.  They make several sockets for removing freewheels and some for cassettes.  I know that I do not have a cassette at all, but older freewheels, so I am trying to determine which one I need.  Some are obviously not the correct ones but since these are probably very cheap components I don’t know who manufactured them or where to even begin.

Any suggestions?

Ben:

Take wheel with you to bike shop, or were your, buying the remover.
Than you will be sure to get correct one. If you look at the Park Tool
web site, you might be able to find the correct one also, if your ordering
it, online. Or take wheel to bike shop ask them which one you need, than
tell, them you’ll be back later to get it, than order online.
There use too be Shimano,,Sun Tour 2 and 4 notch,Regina,Sun Race,Atom,
I don’t think Park Tools sells tools, from the factory, so it will either be from a
bike shop, or one of the online dealers.

I have one small issue/opinion with one of your options.  I like ordering and saving money online, but I figure that if I need the LBS to help educate me or identify an item that I need, then I"m going to get if from them… the extra cost being part of my education process and for their time.

Just my thoughts… your mileage may vary… smile
